Facial expressions can be categorized along the upper-lower facial axis, from a perceptual perspective

چکیده
A critical question, fundamental for building models of emotion, is how to categorize emotions. Previous studies have typically taken one two approaches: (a) they focused on the pre-perceptual visual cues, salient facial features or configurations were displayed; (b) post-perceptual affective experiences, emotions affected behavior. In this study, we attempted group at a peri-perceptual processing level: it well known that humans perceive different expressions differently, therefore, can classify into distinct categories in terms their perceptual similarities? Here, using novel non-lexical paradigm, assessed dissimilarities between 20 reaction times. Multidimensional-scaling analysis revealed organized predominantly along upper-lower face axis. Cluster behavioral data delineated three superordinate categories, and eye-tracking measurements validated these clustering results. Interestingly, be conceptualized according displays interact with acoustic communications: One comprises mouth features. They likely link species-specific vocalization, example, crying, laughing. The second diagnosing both eye regions. are not directly articulable but expressed prosodically, sad, angry. Expressions third also whole-face completely independent being blends more elementary expressions. We propose theoretical framework interpret tripartite division which expression subsets interpreted as successive phases an evolutionary chain.

Facial expressions of emotion: a cognitive neuroscience perspective.
Facial expressions are one example of emotional behavior that illustrate the importance of emotions to both basic survival and social interaction. Basic facial responses to stimuli such as sweet and bitter taste are important for species fitness and governed by simple rules. Even at this basic level, facial responses have communicative value to other species members. During evolution simple fac...
متن کاملUnconscious facial reactions to emotional facial expressions.
Studies reveal that when people are exposed to emotional facial expressions, they spontaneously react with distinct facial electromyographic (EMG) reactions in emotion-relevant facial muscles. These reactions reflect, in part, a tendency to mimic the facial stimuli. We investigated whether corresponding facial reactions can be elicited when people are unconsciously exposed to happy and angry fa...
متن کاملPerceptual, categorical, and affective processing of ambiguous smiling facial expressions.
Why is a face with a smile but non-happy eyes likely to be interpreted as happy? We used blended expressions in which a smiling mouth was incongruent with the eyes (e.g., angry eyes), as well as genuine expressions with congruent eyes and mouth (e.g., both happy or angry). Tasks involved detection of a smiling mouth (perceptual), categorization of the expression (semantic), and valence evaluati...
متن کاملHyperparameter Optimization and Boosting for Classifying Facial Expressions: How good can a "Null" Model be?
One of the goals of the ICML workshop on representation and learning is to establish benchmark scores for a new data set of labeled facial expressions. This paper presents the performance of a “Null model” consisting of convolutions with random weights, PCA, pooling, normalization, and a linear readout. Our approach focused on hyperparameter optimization rather than novel model components. On t...
